It is well documented that decreased levels of SHBG are seen in hypothyroidism, diabetes, hair loss and advanced aging. Low levels of SHBG have been associated with the use of oral contraceptives. It should be noted that deficient amounts of SHBG contribute to many hormone imbalances as well as skewing the results of other hormone test results. SHBG also binds to a large proportion of testosterone. When evaluating or monitoring testosterone levels, SHBG should be evaluated as well.
Test Preparation For Optimal Results:
If possible, have the lab collected early in the morning or shortly after waking. For comparison purposes, have subsequent labs collected close to the same time.
