PSA Total (Reflex to Free)

This blood test measures the percentage of free (uncomplexed) levels of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA). Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein made by the prostate gland. Although most Prostate Specific Antigen is found in semen, small quantities are also found in the blood.

Prostate-specific antigen is secreted by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland and is normally present in the blood at very low levels. PSA is present in small quantities in the serum of men with healthy prostates, but is often elevated in the presence of prostate cancer and in other prostate disorders.

Test Preparation For Optimal Results:

If possible, have the lab collected early in the morning or shortly after waking. For comparison purposes, have subsequent labs collected close to the same time.
