Description
Progesterone prepares the uterus to receive and sustain pregnancy Progesterone balances the powerful effects of estrogen. An imbalance in progesterone will have an effect on sleep, respiration, mood, appetite, learning and memory. Progesterone is a neurosteroid, which means it is neuroprotective. Progesterone supports the normal development of neurons in the brain and has a protective effect on damaged brain tissue. It is important to assess thyroid function when evaluating progesterone levels. Thyroid hormones sensitize cells so progesterone can be readily used. If cells are not exposed to enough thyroid hormones, progesterone cannot enter the cells. In men, a progesterone imbalance can cause weight gain, decrease in libido and prostate enlargement.
