Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), Intact & Calcium

This blood test measures Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) levels. Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) is secreted by the parathyroid glands in response to a decrease in serum calcium levels by increasing the reabsorption of calcium by the kidneys and lowering the absorption of phosphorus.

Parathyroid hormone regulates the concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the blood and helps in the synthesis of Vitamin D. PTH is useful identifying and managing hypercalcemia.

Test Preparation For Optimal Results:

If possible, have the lab collected early in the morning or shortly after waking. For comparison purposes, have subsequent labs collected close to the same time.
