This blood test measures Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) level. Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) is also known as vasopressin. Antidiuretic hormone is a polypeptide hormone secreted by the posterior portion of the pituitary gland. Antidiuretic hormone is secreted when specialized cells in the brain or heart detect a change in the concentration of blood or blood pressure. Antidiuretic hormone causes blood vessels to constrict which elevates blood pressure and reduces the amount of water lost in urine.
